Mad Hatter v 2

Description

There were things about my first Mad Hat [link] I didn't like, mainly that it lacked the slight curve that Depp's had. After a lot of work, some cursing, and watching the movie a few times, I've managed to make a more-accurate Hatter's hat.

Changed:
The fabric is a nod to the movie tones [link] rather than the promo posters [link] as the promo posters were toned green for interest. The hat is much more brown in actuality.

The Curve! I finally accomplished the curve, which makes me inordinatley happy.

The Card! More looking at the movie shows that the 10/6 card is much smaller, so I scaled it down.

I've also made the hatband/scarf a little longer, and will probably legenthen it again for my next hat.

The hatpins I need to do some shopping to find more accurate toppers, but considering I'm pretty sure the movie ones are actual antiques, that's going to be tricky to match.

Construction Details!

The hat is made out of theatre quality 2-ply buckram, heavy gauge wire, fosshape, felt, glue, blood sweat tears....

The hat fabric is an awesome find - a subtle brown and gold brocade print with a felted floral overprint. The hat band is gold-shot mauve/salmon with hand painted gold flowers. One end is hand frayed, the other is cut to a 'V' as per the original.

The hat pins are non-functional (Since they wouldn't work per the design) and have beads hand-picked from multiple sources including vintage shops and former necklaces. There is a hand-wrapped pair of peacock feathers stitched to the left side, and the 10/6 card has been burnt and scaled to match the original, tucked into the hat band.

There are two ' patches ', each hand sewn to the front left and right of the hat. The left patch is hand dyed, while the right patch is the hat fabric set to be offset printed and has been lightly edged in gold paint to accentuate the difference.

The hat is 95% hand sewn. It takes about 10-12 hours to make one.

I'm taking comissions and sell on Etsy [link]

I do take comissions for other hats, send me a note if you're interested.
